SC2 is honored to have Dean & Dylon a father and son book their first big game hunts with us. We appreciate that they would entrust us with such an endeavor. We couldn’t have scripted a more perfect day.
The weather in Northern California has been incredible this year. The winter has brought much needed water and the hogs have been spread throughout Shasta County. Everyone has running water, stock ponds are full and the grass is 2 foot tall, even the winter range cattle can’t keep up with it. At O'Dark thirty we were meeting for the ride to the ranch hoping to catch the hogs before they took cover.
As the sun rose we glassed as far as we could see looking for hogs, amazing how much the tall grass hides the little suckers. It took us about a 2 hours before we stumbled onto our first group of hogs.
While we worked into position I did my best to walk Dylon through what was about to happen, what could happen and hopefully would happen. He was calm and confident as he was locked in on the shooting sticks while we sorted through the group of 7 hogs. We had 120 pounders milling about while 2 sows with 5 piglets bedded on the north side of the dam. We got things sorted out and Dylon had his first wild hog on the ground. Awesome!!!
While we were still riding high from Dylon’s success we located another group of hogs. It was 2 big sows with a half dozen piglets, a huge pregnant sow and 2 dry sows all the hogs were north of 200 pounds. Now with Dean on the sticks, we went through the progression of choosing which hog to target. At 180 yards Dean made a great shot and took full advantage of his turn behind the scope.
The father son duo had 2 punched tags and 2 nice hogs. The wet winter has made for some fat hogs, they are leaving with a lifelong memory and a freezer full of wild pork. We are pleased to be part of Dean and Dylon’s hog hunting experience. Thank you.
